In 1998, Riding for the
Disabled Association’s patron, Her Highness
Sheikha Hassa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum
launched the program by donating 3 of her horses
to be used for therapeutic riding. October 2008
marked the beginning of RDAD’s 10th season of
therapeutic riding lessons.
We have approximately 60 children currently
enrolled in the riding programme. Examples of
riders’ disabilities include autism, cerebral
palsy, Down syndrome, spina bifida, mental retardation,
and various learning disabilities.
History records people
with disabilities as riding horses as early
as the days of the ancient Greeks. RDAD's programme
utilises the horse to achieve a variety of therapeutic
goals, thereby allowing our students to develop
their physical, cognitive and emotional abilities.
This means we can encourage our riders to achieve
more than they ever thought possible, allowing
us to focus on ABILITY and not disability.
RDAD is a not for profit organisation and relies
totally on assistance from individuals and organisations
to keep the programme running. You can support
us by promoting awareness of our programme,
or just by coming along and volunteering.
